Photograph Showcase: Uncle Rady

MAFFIT, Lorado Shorman
Lorado Shorman Maffit

Lorado Shorman Maffit, “Uncle Rady”, is my great-granduncle.  He was born 24 February 1916 in Gildford, Hill, Montana to my 2nd great-grandparents, Seth Maffit & Emma Esther Jerrain.

This lovely portrait was taken by his older sister Estelle, my great-grandmother.  Looking at this photo I can feel how much Grandma Estelle loved her brother.  Do you feel it too?

Uncle Rady died when I was 16, if I ever met him, I don’t remember.

Note:  This post originally called him “Uncle Corky” and shared some details about Uncle Corky.  My Mom misremembered and I didn’t double check my notes.  Whoops!  Thankfully one of my Grandma’s cousins sent me a kind email.  Uncle Corky was a different brother.  Thank you, Willow Jeane!  ❤️

Happy Thursday, I hope you make a fantastic photo discovery very soon!  xoxo

  1. I was wondering about his name. The only “Corky” I’ve ever heard of was a TV character—I think on Circus Boy (before your time, I’m sure). And sixteen—how sad—I think I recall you writing about him. Was it an accident? Train? And doesn’t he look about 25-30 in that photo?

    1. My Mom gave me the wrong nickname. Haha – I totally should have looked it up in my tree but I just trusted her. This IS Uncle Lorado, but his nickname was Rady. Thankfully my Grandma’s first cousin reads my blog and she kindly alerted me to my mistake. I’ve corrected the post.

You are right – he is older than 16 for sure! I was 16 when Uncle Lorado died. His sister is my great-grandmother and she died when I was 14 months old so my generation didn’t see a lot of her siblings after that. I suppose that is pretty normal.

      1. I must have misread what you wrote—I thought HE was 16 when he died! Oops!! And I like Corky better than Rady!! 🙂

    1. Thank you!! I hope it helps.

Dear Universe, please send Lenore a fantastic photo discovery very, very soon!! xoxo

  2. I am wondering how old he was when he died for I understood your text to say that your mother was 16 years old when he died. He looked like a very happy person & I think there is a definite family resemblance. Thank you for remembering us!

    1. Thank you, Nancy. I’m not sure how old he was in this photo. I was 16 when he died. If I met him, I don’t remember it. 🙂
