Alice Hyde is my 2nd great-grandmother. She is the paternal grandmother of my own Grandma Deane. Here, Alice is pictured with three of her grandchildren – Richard Joseph Cleveland on the left, my grandmother Deane Alice Duval on the right, and Deane’s brother Frank in front.
This photo was printed 22 February 1938 in Bellingham, Washington as seen on the photo back:
Based on the clothing and leafless bushes in the background, I’m wondering if the photo was taken in the fall of 1937. What do you think?
Happy Thursday, I hope you choose to preserve and share a treasured photo today! xoxo
Maybe an early spring day that would merit short sleeves as I cannot perceive deciduous foliage in the background.
Possibly in February, but not any later given the age of the youngest child and the date stamp on the back of the photo. At least I have a pretty tight window – some photo backs give us zero clues. 😉
That makes sense.
🙂
If it is Feb 1937, then my Dad sure is a big one year old with a great head of hair, looks like he even has had his first haircut by then. I guess it is a later date.
Hi Heather! The date stamp reads, 22 February 1938. So I’m thinking very late fall in 1937, when your Dad was close to turning two… What do you think? I tried to find a reliable source for the weather in Aberdeen in 1937 to help tighten up the date but it seemed that was going to be too time consuming. Haha. 😉
Everything else aside, I’m so surprised that your Dad is wearing roller skates at such a young age! He is adorable. And I love Grandma’s cute head tilt.
So cute how your Grandma Deane is leaning her head on her grandmother. I would also say autumn of 1937 since the trees are bare. I have family pictures with Christmas motifs and stamped between May and July the following year. Sometimes film was in the camera for months before being developed.
I thought the very same thing about Grandma’s posture! Thank you, Cathy.
Thank you for the input on the date. I think with Uncle Frank’s age and size, Fall of 1937 is about the only thing that works.
Got to love old photos! I just found some Hyde’s in my own tree!
Yes, I DO love old photos!! Where are your Hyde’s from Linda?
