I LOVE keyboard shortcuts!
They save time and page loads, which of course is also time. I love saving page loads. I’m a busy mom, I will do anything I can to save page loads.
So today, I would like to introduce you to one of the lesser known keyboard shortcuts, ‘Command Click’ for a mac OR ‘Control Click’ for a pc.
In the video I will show you how to use this tip on:
- Ancestry.com – open items in new windows without losing the page you started from.
- Ancestry.com – open ‘Suggested Records’ in their own windows so you can click back and forth between them to compare the data. (Did you already know about the ‘Suggested Records’ on the sidebar in Ancestry.com? If not, another bonus tip for you!)
- FamilySearch.com – open people in a new window without losing the tree view you started from.
- FamilySearch.com – open other family members in their own window without losing the family member you started from.
- Blog posts – when a blog post has links that don’t open in their own window – learn how to open them in their own window so you don’t lose the blog post you started from.
- Amazon.com – if you’ve loaded up your cart with several items you want to choose between, from the cart, open each item in their own window so you can easily click between windows without waiting for page loads.
- ANY website with hyperlinks – learn how to open those links in their own window.
Seriously guys, if you use the internet for anything at all, you ALL want to watch this one.
Make sure you click and HOLD the command or control button while you click your mouse.

Thank you Katie! Haha, I drive my whole family crazy with my multiple tabs, and I don’t care a bit that it bugs them. I just open a new window for them and then they are fine. 😉
This is one I use all the time. Sometimes I have so many tabs open I can’t read the words to know which is which!
Me too!! If it gets too out of hand, I open a second window, put related tabs there to thin it down and then deal with one set of tabs at a time. I’ve been surprised at the center that most people don’t know about this one. I love showing people a new trick that makes their life move along a little easier. 🙂
I recently taught my husband about Ctrl-Z for Undo, and he is so happy (though he can’t remember the key combination, so I have to keep telling him!).
I love that shortcut too! I use it all of the time. My husband can’t ever remember Command N for new window. I really wish he would remember – he frequently just overrides something I have open on my computer. 😉
And men think they are better at technology?
Haha! My husband does not struggle with that particular bit of hubris. He openly admits that he can’t work my computer, the remote, or his phone. But I know exactly what you are talking about! 😉
I think our husbands might be related…. Mine always says that in our house there is role reversal because I am the only one who knows how to use the remote. 🙂

Huh. I’ve always right click on the link, then hit open in New tab or new window. Will have to try this one.

As for the multiple tabs open, i found a chrome app that helps, called One Tab. It puts all the tabs in that endure into a page with clickable links. I can move those links into groups, say, for Vidunas research, and i can name those links. I love it. Easy to share, easy to modify.

I do the same thing as dayspringacres and it might be hard to change the habit. I try to go through all links and photos on my blog posts and format them to open in a new window. I realized (ok I checked while watching your video) that the links in my list of sources open in the same tab.
