Jens Peter Folkman & Maren Katrine Thomasen are my 3rd great-grandparents. They were both born in Denmark and immigrated to America as Mormon Pioneers who made their way west to Utah. They met and married in Utah. Here they are pictured with their youngest daughter Jane Zina Petrina Folkman, who went by Petrina. Petrina was born in 1876 and is my 2nd great-grandmother.
I am very familiar with part of this photo. You see, at some point, someone cropped it down to just Maren’s head. That cropped photo can be found on FamilySearch and other places online. Until recently, I had never seen the full image. What a wonderful find in my Grandmother’s boxes!

Great old photo! One thing I never realized before reading your blog is that the LDS church was not just an American church. And I read recently that the church now find the term “Mormon” unacceptable—is that true?

Yes, it is definitely a world-wide church. There are now more LDS church members living outside of the US than inside of the US (although that has been true for a number of years). Unacceptable… that may be a stronger word than the intent behind what you are referring to. The name of the church has always been “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”. The term “Mormon” was actually first used by those who were persecuting early members. Over time, it became a very mainstream nickname and then the church actually started using it in certain settings. There are even two church-run websites that use the term – mormon.org and mormonnewsroom.org (be careful with the second one, there is a fake website that just has an extra period in the address and is a very convincing fake). However, our prophet, President Russell M Nelson, just recently announced that the church will be referred to by it’s full name and that adjustments will be made to all publications etc. Here is the press release: https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/president-nelson-discusses-church-name-canada
It is such a long name though that I’m sure we will still see “LDS” and “Mormon” in plenty of places. (Obviously, I still used it in this post. 😉 )

My take on the on the “Mormon” thing is they are no longer using it and in three generations I am sure people will have forgotten The Church of the Later Day Saints was called anything else. All the folks at my Family History Center are so delightful I can not imagine any of them using the term “unacceptable”.

I know people love to have cameo images for their ancestors but how can they not want to see the big picture?
I agree! Although in fairness, I think it was inadvertent. There were these pre-printed family group sheets that had spaces for photos back in the… 60s? 70s? (not really sure when). The spaces were very, very small so most people would find a photo and then have a copy made, cut it down and then make copies of that to use on the forms. I think one of those family group sheets survived and the photo was scanned from that by one person and then shared. I just think whoever started with the full picture never scanned and shared it. I am happy this photo made it’s way to me so that we can all enjoy the full image now. 🙂

What a great photo! I just love the thrill of finding a photograph that I haven’t seen before and just gazing into the eyes of an ancestor you feel you know through all the research you’ve done. It’s a great feeling!
