Today’s photo is one of the first that my cousin Gregg ever shared with me (previously shared here). I remember being in awe of the photo. I had been researching my Scottish family members for several years but had never seen any photos beyond my Scottish-born great-grandmother Mary Brown Young.
This photo includes my 3rd great-grandparents, James Young & Ann Vickers, and some of their children. They are the paternal grandparents of my great-grandmother. What a treasure!

Gregg Young wrote this regarding the provenance of this family photo:
Subjects in photo: The older couple are James Young (1850-1916) and his wife Ann(ie) Vickers (1854-1913). Note: In some documents Vickers is spelled Vicars. I suspect that the others in the photo are some of their younger children but have no proof of this. I suspect that the older boy in the doorway is Alexander Douglas Young (b 1882). I believe the girl next to him to be Christina Vicars (b. 1884) and the other two girls are Agnes (b. 1886) and Mary (b. 1887). I believe the young lad in the kilts is Robert Bennie (b. 1890).
My relationship: James Young and Ann Vickers are my great grandparents.
Photo Information: My Grandmother, Catherine Young (nee Brown) had this photograph. It came into my father’s possession after her death. After his passing, the photo came to my possession.
My father could identify the older couple as his grandparents by name. He could not name any of the others in the photo. The names listed for the children are only a supposition of mine.
I do not know when the photo was taken but taking the age of the youngest boy at being close to 10 years, this would be close to 1900.
I do not know who took the photo. It may possibly be a photographer passing through the neighborhood. This photo is about 4 inches by 6 inches and is NOT a postcard that were so popular at this time
Confirmation: My father never met his grandparents as they lived in Scotland and he was born in Butte Montana, however, they were known to him from a variety of photos that his parents had. Mary Costello (nee Young) also identified photos with the same subjects as her grandparents.
