Ellis Album

Black Ellis Album #1, Page 42

This album page features two photos of friends of my great-grandmother, Blanche Octavia Huband. The caption for the first photo includes a year. The second does not, but they appear to have been taken on the same day. Verna is in both photos and is wearing the same dress, necklace, and hairstyle. Additionally, the tree that can be seen through the porch “window” looks the same.

The first photo is labeled, “Misses Verna & Vera Bailey — 1916.”

The second photo is labeled, “Byron & Earl Chadwick[,] Vera Bailey.”

The second label helps clarify the label on the first photo. Although it reads, “Misses Verna & Vera Bailey — 1916,” Vera is on the left and Verna is on the right. Vera is Marion Vera (Bailey) Toone, 1897–1995. Verna is her sister, Verna Olive (Bailey) Campbell, 1893–1969. This lovely photo of Verna on FamilySearch appears to have been taken around the same time as the photo in this album and supports the identification of the two sisters.

Finding Byron and Earl was a bit trickier. I think I’ve found them. The man in the center of my photo appears to be Abraham Earl Chadwick, 1896–1984. This photo of Earl is a nice match to my photo. In Earl’s FamilySearch Memories, there is a group photo that includes my great-grandmother, Blanche Huband, who created this photo album. This photo connects the Abraham Earl Chadwick on FamilySearch to Blanche.

Earl has a brother named Byron Arthur Chadwick, 1900–1987. This photo of Byron shows the same unique hairline as seen in the man on the left in my photo.

I emailed a descendant of Earl to ask for confirmation of the identities of Byron and Earl. Hopefully they will respond. What do you think? Did I correctly identify the Bailey sisters and Chadwick brothers?

Update: Thank you to my cousin Suzanne who pointed out that there are photos of the Chadwick home on FamilySearch. John Samuel Chadwick, 1862–1947, and Charlotte Emily Godfrey, 1869–1923, were the parents of Abraham Earl Chadwick, 1896–1984 and Byron Arthur Chadwick, 1900–1987. In John Samuel Chadwick’s memories are several photos of the family home. This one shows the unique features of the front porch as seen in my photos.

Thank you, Suzanne! I now feel confident to tag Byron and Earl.
