This album page includes three photos taken in Turlock, California. The first is of Corydon Henry Bevans, 1839–1915, and Bertha Ann Huband, 1854–1940. The photo is captioned, “Judge & Mrs. C. H. Bevans. Turlock, Cal.” This album was created by Blanche Octavia Huband, my great-grandmother. Bertha was her aunt.

The next two photos are of the Bevans home in Turlock, California. Blanche captioned the first, “Home of C. H. Bevans. Turlock, California”

She captioned the second, “Home of C. H. Bevans. Turlock, Calif.”

This post is part of a series sharing this wonderful old family photo album. You can learn more about the album here. A digital version of this photo album can be viewed on Flickr here.
That house is 519 Crane Ave in Turlock. In 1914 and maybe 1915 before Corydon passed away, they were still living in their house on 4th street. The Crane house still stands today but the 4th street house is gone (if it had been on the opposite side of the street it might have survived!) On the 1920 census, Bertha Huband Bevans, Corydon Jr., Bertha and Ted Shearer were listed as living at the Crane house. Were it not for the labeling on this photo I would not have known the family moved to the Crane house before Corydon’s death – I am not really sure they did. The photos taken in May 1915 which seem to be the last taken of Corydon Sr., and in which all five of his daughters are there with him and their mother, also include a photo of the five sisters standing on the steps in front of the 4th street house. The evidence of this photo having been taken the same day is that all of them are wearing the exact clothes as in the other photos.
A note about my dating the photos – I said 1915 because of at least one photo (I have dups of them in my family’s albums from that era) is marked 1915 while some of Amberly’s are marked 1914. I really don’t know which year is correct – yet!
I should have checked a couple things before replying to myself – looks like I can’t edit my own comment…
I realized that I could use the photos of Maude and Eliza’s children that are in some of the photos from that day to determine the correct year – I think 1914 is right. Maude’s girls look about 5 and 2+3m, in addition the group photo where Eliza is holding him, I have a couple of little Corydon (Eliza’s son) running around the yard and he is definitely looking more like a one year old that a 2 year old. Now I have to go and change the year on all my photos!
Wow, Suzanne! Thank you for sharing additional insights about the Bevans family, their home(s), and the date of this photo! I’m grateful for you, cousin. 💜
