Photograph Showcase: One-Month-Old Grandma Deane

DUVAL, Deane being held by her mother, July 1932, 1 month old - edited
Hope Estelle Maffit holding her one-month-old daughter, Deane Alice Duval, July 1932, Great Falls, Montana

This sweet infant is my Grandma Deane being held by her mother, Hope Estelle Maffit.  Grandma was born 27 June 1932 in Great Falls, Montana.  This photo was taken in July.  The back reads, “1 mo. old July 1932” and there is a stamp for a photo studio in Great Falls, Montana.

I love the profile of my Great-Grandma Duval’s face in this photo as well as her lovely waves.  What a treasure!  ❤️

Here is the back of the photo:

This photo really took a beating over the last 86 years.  Here is the original scan before I cleaned it up:

Happy Thursday!  I hope you make a fantastic photo discovery very soon.  Or better yet, scan a photo you already have and share it with your family!!  xoxo

    1. Thank you, Amy! Yes, she really is. Grandma was her first child. ❤️

My Mom and one of her first cousins commented on this photo in my family Facebook album that they had never seen it before. It is such a joy to be able to share treasures like this with my loved ones.

  1. That’s a really great photo. Seeing your Grandma at just a month old, that’s so cool. It’s always fun sharing a photo that family hasn’t ever seen or hasn’t seen in a long time. Fun stuff!

    1. Thank you, Laura! Exactly, sharing a photo your family hasn’t seen always feels like such a gift. What a privilege to be the family historian. ❤️

  2. You did a wonderful job cleaning up the photo but the original with all its wear and tear is still my favorite. Your great-grandmother looks more like a big sister holding her little sister.

    1. Thank you, Cathy! Great-grandma does look awfully young in this photo. 😉 I also love to see the wear of old photos, but my problem is that I am easily distracted so I don’t notice the actual photo. So, I always clean them up to some extent, when I really love them, I clean them up all of the way. But, I do keep the original scan as it is and of course I keep the original photo as well.

  3. I’m looking at that baby with adoring eyes. She is just precious. She is almost one year younger than my sister so I guessed correctly on your more recent post. Just look at how trim your great-grandmother looks so soon after giving birth. My grandmothers were born in 1869 & 1875 so I never knew them at all. The loss is saddening, but I know you are so happy to have had the opportunity to know & love your precious grandma.

    1. Thank you, Nancy. Yes, I am so grateful to have been able to spend lots of time with both of my grandmothers. ❤️
