In honor of FamilySearch’s worldwide indexing event this week, I am bringing you a few indexing tips.
This video is geared toward beginning indexers but it also includes a few of my personal indexing tips that would apply to anyone.

ps – I am having a hard time letting go of the old indexing software. When indexing that way you ‘download’ a batch. The new web indexing tool is great, you don’t download, but I think I said the phrase ‘download a batch’ a few times. Sorry! Old habits and all of that. 😉 Also, if you use the new web indexing, you can access your batches from any device and index anywhere you have internet access. Pretty cool.
The projects I want to index are desktop projects so I’m also still saying download. I haven’t had a look at the web projects to see how they are done.
It’s going to be a big adjustment for me. The projects I like to index that are in French have English field titles and English help info. On the web tool, it’s all in French. I’m not nearly that proficient. There is probably some setting that could help but I haven’t figured it out yet. Fingers crossed that I can find an easy way to index French records on the web tool. 🙂
I need to get back to indexing. I haven’t done it in quite a while—I found it rather tiresome, but I know it’s important.
I can relate to that feeling. Some projects are far more tedious than others. I try to find a project that might potentially help my own research when it’s done and that seems to help me. 🙂
Most of what I need for my research is either in a language I can’t translate or from a place where most data has been indexed. I was doing places like Virginia where I have no or almost no relatives. So yeah, it was tedious!
That is waaaaay less interesting for sure! As you know, my tree takes me all over the globe so I can pretty much always find an indexing project that is enticing.
