I found this lovely photo of my Grandpa in my Grandma’s boxes. I wonder if this was his graduation picture? The year was 1944, his senior year of High School. It would only be a few more months before he would enlist in the Marine Corps. I wonder if he was already thinking about that when this picture was taken?
It does look like a senior photo. Young men looked so much more mature back then—hard to believe he’s only 18, given how teenage boys dress these days! (I know I sound like an old fogey!!)
I’m with you! He looks pretty dapper for an 18 year old. Nowadays it’s rare to see an 18 year old boy in a crisply ironed shirt and suit, clean cut, and smiling brightly. It reminds me of an article I read recently of a boy about that age who put on a suit to go to the hospital to meet his brand new niece. If I recall correctly he said something about first impressions being so important. We could use a little more of that today. 🙂
Yes, and although I love wearing jeans and a t-shirt, some of what kids wear these days to school is ridiculous!

Hehe. I was thinking exactly the same thing as Amy. Although I’m pretty happy not to have to iron shirts and pick up suits from the dry cleaners for my son!
So true! My missionary son became a pro at ironing his own dress shirts because I would ask him on Saturday if it was clean and ready for church. He was often too lazy to go check and would just say yes but then on Sunday when he realized his shirt was in a heap on his floor, he knew better than to ask for my help so he would just iron it himself. He got REALLY good at ironing. Hahaha. 🙂
The Big T is very self-sufficient in that respect. One of his flatmates years ago taught him to iron. I will admit though, I’m a lot faster and because he doesn’t wear dress shirts all that often, I don’t mind doing them.
I buy my hubby wrinkle free shirts so neither of us iron. 😉

It looks like a senior photo to me, too. I bet that you are right that he was thinking about the war and possibly enlisting. The students in the Class of ’44 graduated at a tough time. They had to grow up fast.
