Who Is On That Swing?

Estelle Duval on swing

On Saturday I posted this photo explaining that my grandmother had told me it was a photo of her mother.  I shared that when it loaded and appeared on the screen I didn’t think it looked like Estelle.  I wondered if it was really my great grandmother or one of her sisters.

Deborah Sweeney suggested that I post other photos of Estelle so you could all weigh in.

Here’s a bit of background.  I will keep my opinions to myself so I don’t color your impressions.

Estelle was born and raised in Montana.  She was born in 1913, married in 1930.  She had three sisters that lived long enough they could be pictured here:

  • Hi, born 1909
  • Marj, born 1918
  • Jackie, born 1924

The original photo that my grandmother identified measures 1 1/2 ” x 2 1/2″.  Pretty small for my 80 year old grandma to look at.

Here are photos for comparison:

This photo was labeled by Estelle, 'June 1935 at Grandma's'. My grandmother identified the place as Montana and the people as Estelle on the left, Marj on the right, my Grandma is on the swing, Jackie is on the ground.

So, what do you think?  Is my grandmother right?  Is that Estelle on the swing?

All opinions, impressions, thoughts welcome.

  1. I vote yes. Her hair changes a lot, but her bone structure, especially around the eyebrows, does not. I think there’s also a similarity of expression between the swing picture and the 1945 portrait.

  2. I’m going to agree; I think it is Estelle. Like Leslie, I think the facial structure is consistent. When I was looking at the images it occured to me that someone should market facial recognition software modified specifically for family historians. Wouldn’t it make comparing all those old, unlabelled photos, so much easier. 🙂

  3. After copying the photo, balancing, fixing contrast and cropping I’d say it’s Estelle. None of the other faces you’ve photos of fit the bone structure, set of eyes, shape of nose and mouth.

      1. It ended up a bit pixelated but it was enough to see the bone structure. I’ve done this with some of my family photos, sometimes it’s the only way to really see the face enough to make any kind of determination.

  4. I agree with the others and believe it is Estelle. The face shapes really do match so I’d say it is a good chance the woman on the swing is Estelle. Good luck 🙂
